The OilField Journal

The OilField Journal is a scholarly journal published by Friends of Drake Well, Inc., since 2000. The publication features original manuscripts and articles that relate to the early petroleum and gas industry of Pennsylvania. Members of Friends of Drake Well are automatically subscribed to the OilField Journal as a member benefit. Non-members or those members who wish to have additional copies can purchase past volumes through the Museum Store by calling (814) 827-2797 or by visiting the Store during its regular hours of operation from April 1st through the end of December.

There are 20 volumes of the OilField Journal. Volumes 1 & 2 are no longer in print and not available for purchase. Electronic copies of all past volumes can be provided upon request. An index of each volume's articles and authors can be found here.

Call for Papers!

Article submissions are currently being accepted for the next volume of the OilField Journal, a peer-reviewed journal published biennially by Friends of Drake Well, Inc. Friends of Drake Well is the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that actively supports the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in the administration of Drake Well Museum and Park in Titusville, PA. It has published the OilField Journal since 2000 to support Drake Well Museum in its mission to uncover, preserve, and share Pennsylvania’s rich petroleum history, connecting past to present through a diversity of perspectives.

The OilField Journal accepts original, primary source-based manuscripts relating to the early petroleum and gas industry of Pennsylvania. The Journal especially encourages articles that focus on different subject areas, including but not limited to industrial history, social history, women and gender studies, ethnic studies, cultural studies, political history, sciences, and more.

All selected manuscripts are peer-reviewed and subject to modification if needed by the Journal’s editorial committee, both before and after being accepted for publication. Submissions to the OilField Journal must not be under review for another publication, and by virtue of submission, authors agree not to publish the article elsewhere without the consent of Friends of Drake Well, Inc.

The next issue of the OilField Journal is scheduled to be published in January 2028; therefore, the deadline to submit articles is May 1, 2027.
